1. First Dont Panic!

If your horse is in an emergency situation, the most important thing to remember is not to panic. This may not be easy but a level headed assessment of the problem is very important. Make thorough and concise observations: Is the horse down and rolling and colicy? Is he sweating? Is the respiratory rate increased? (A normal respiratory rate at rest would be less than 20 breaths per minute)

  • What is the body temperature? (High normal is 101 degrees)
  • Are there wounds?
  • Is there bleeding?
  • Can pressure be applied to control bleeding?
  • Is there a lameness and or reluctance to move?
  • Can you see any swellings?
  • Are the gums moist and pink or dark and tacky to the touch?
  • Is the horse passing normal manure?

Once you have assessed your horse and have a grip on what is abnormal about your horse, you can now seek veterinary help and pass your observations to the vet which will help them immensely in evaluating the case.
