CT scan
San Luis Rey Equine Hospital to be the only Equine Hospital in Southern California to offer Computerized Tomography as one of our many imaging services. This CT scanner is able to scan numerous areas including the skull (teeth, sinus and brain), cervical vertebrae, tarsus, carpus, fetlocks, feet and foal thorax and abdomen. The Tomoscan M is also able to assist with needle-guided procedures such as navicular bursa injections, biopsies and localized treatments. We now have cross-sectional imaging capability that parallels human medicine.
Commonly referred to as CT scans, Computed Tomography is a technology that uses very small x-ray beams from many different angles around the body (called a slice) that are reconstructed by computer to produce an image. The tissue images show up on the monitor as black, white and shades of gray (called the gray scale). The amount of gray shows the ability of different tissues to absorb the x-ray beam, helping to identify normal and abnormal tissue. Our hospital uses a Tomoscan M for this, and diagnosing various lamenesses, skull problems involving the sinuses and teeth, and others. San Luis Rey Equine Hospital is one of the few veterinary hospitals in the world to offer this diagnostic procedure, performing approximately 100 scans yearly.
