An endoscope is a small flexible fiber optic tube with an attached camera that allows direct visualization of internal structures. The endoscope allows examination and evaluation of otherwise inaccessible structures such as the upper respiratory tract (including the pharynx, trachea and guttural pouches), the upper gastrointestinal tract, the urethra and bladder as well as the cervix and uterus in the mare. The videoendoscopy allows the image to be displayed on a monitor in addition to providing video imaging capabilities for referring veterinarians.
Arthroscopy, also known as keyhole surgery because it is done through a very small incision, is a surgical technique in which a small telescope and camera is placed into a joint to allow either the diagnosis of joint problems or to remove bone chips. The image is projected onto a monitor for viewing by the surgeons. Due to the small incision, this technique permits a more rapid recovery than with conventional surgery.
Laparoscopy is a procedure done through a very small incision (keyhole surgery), under local or general anesthesia, for the evaluation and/or treatment of certain abdominal conditions (chronic colic and peritonitis), certain surgical procedures (cryptorchidectomy and ovariectomy;removal of bladder stones). As with arthroscopy, the small incision permits a more rapid recovery than conventional surgery.
