Nestled in the green foothills of Bonsall, California, the San Luis Rey Equine hospital is located among the scenic hilltops of north San Diego County. The practice is situated on 5 acres of quiet hillside, hosts great views, sunshine and clean air.

In contrast to the simple rural atmosphere, the facilities are state-of the art. The clinic is a full service 24-hour facility which has space for over 30 inpatients. The main clinic building has a surgical suite, recovery room, treatment room, radiology equipment a well-equipped laboratory, and pharmacy. There is a 10 stall barn adjacent to the treatment room which houses the intensive care patients. In addition the hospital has a separate isolation facility and a quiet secluded barn for orthopedic cases. There is an outdoor arena available for lunging and trotting horses. There are 3 paddocks for turn out of hospital patients or day use. The administrative building sits directly on top of the hill and provides both indoor and outdoor accommodations for clients while their horses are seen by the veterinarian.

The diagnostic imaging building is situated in close proximity to the orthopedic ward. The hospital’s imaging capabilities include nuclear scintigraphy ( bone scan), computed tomography ( cat scan), computerized radiology, ultrasound and endoscopy. San Luis Rey also provides Shock wave therapy for our patients which is done in the diagnostic imaging center.

Poor performance exams are conducted on our high speed treadmill. The equine athletes ability to tolerate the metabolic and oxygen demands that come with intense exercise are measured using an endoscope which views the dimensions of the upper airway and an analyzer which measures the concentrations of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood while the horse is exercising.
