A myelogram is an x-ray study in which a special clear radiolucent dye is injected into the cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the spinal cord. The spinal cord is not visible on a conventional x-ray so the injection of the dye outlines the spinal cord when viewed by radiographs. A myelogram is a very delicate diagnostic procedure and should be done by an experienced veterinarian. At San Luis Rey Equine Hospital, our surgeons perform between 80 and 90 myelograms a year.
